In Memory of: Irving Chester "Bud" Stevens Beloved Son, Husband, Father and Grandfather


This memorial website was created to remember our dearest  Irving "Bud" Stevens who was born in Astoria, Oregon on October 12, 1919 and passed away on January 26, 2009 at the age of 89. You will live forever in our memories and hearts.

 

Bud was born in Astoria in 1919 to Irving Taylor Stevens and Bessie Williams Stevens. He had one older sister, Anita, who passed on in Septermber of 2006.

 

Irv and Bessie lived in Astoria in the teens, and owned several restaurants including the Palace and the Cat & the Fiddle. The family moved to Seaside, just before the big fire, and opened the Stevens' Restaurant on Broadway, across the river from where the Bridge Tender is nowIn the late 20's, the Stevens moved back to Astoria, and Bud graduated from Astoria High School.

 

In 1937, Irv and Bessie moved to Cannon Beach and purchased the Ecola Coffee Shop, while Bud worked on tug boats in the river. During WWII he joined the Army and was stationed in Naples, Italy.

 

On the day he returned home, Irv suffered a heart attack, and Bud changed his plans to work in tropical waters, and joined his mother in the restaurant business. Bud was very active in community affairs in Cannon Beach, and together with Les Ordway, helped to found the Cannon Beach Fire Dept., and the American Legion Post #168. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner.

 

Bud met Jeanette Sund in 1950. Her father had come to town to do construction work, and she worked in the Ecola Restaurant during her nurse's training. They were married on March 5, 1955, and her parents house on Sunset Blvd. in Cannon Beach. Bud and Jeanette had two children.

 

Bud, Jeanette, and Bessie ran the Ecola Restaurant until the fall of 1976. Bud was the cook, and was well known for his clam chowder, french fries and warm cobbler with soft ice cream. In 1981, they opened the Ecola Inn motel, after several years of remodeling under the direction of a great friend, Ted Erickson.

 

Bud ran the Ecola Inn until 2008. He greeted multi generations of many families with his warm smile and quick wit. He was passionate about his beliefs, his family and his business. He loved his land, and living in Cannon Beach.

Bud is survived by his wife Jeanette, his son Mike, his daughter Sally and his granddaughter Samantha.
